Every once in a while, I like to get some of my girls together for some good old fashioned geekery. We’ve had a variety of themed evenings, and a few months back, we decided to have a “Star” themed evening.
It’s not hard to throw together a fun themed night with little expense when you get just a little bit creative.
For example, while the evening could involve anything star-themed, several found that when it came to eats, what would Picard do was the question of the evening.
He would definitely enjoy some wine – after all, his father was a winemaker. (If only we had a bottle of Chateau Picard.)
And what would an evening where we watched Star Trek: TNG be without a healthy cup of Earl Grey?
And if you’ve got wine, the natural pairing would be any sort of cheese plate, right?
Of course, we needed some decor worthy of the evening. I hit up the dollar store for some cheap picture frames, then printed out some fun images and quotes and scattered them throughout the house.
Those little gold bags? Take home gifts. Dollar jewelry found on etsy that were “gems from other planets”.
And don’t forget fun activities! Sure, sitting around reminiscing about our favorite (or least favorite) episodes and characters was good times, but a good old fashioned quiz seemed like a good way to mix things up.
All of us seriously need to brush up on our Klingon.
Despite our dismal performance, everyone received prizes! Prizes were bargain bin comic books and figures from a local comic book store – all STAR themed.
And of course, more food! The only requirement for the choices made? Justify its existence in the Star Trek universe. Some guests were able to give specific episodes where their food appeared or was referenced (go geeks!).
Others were happy to rely on the use of the replicator or holodeck, which was totally passable, since the point of these evenings is fun – not killing yourself to make noodles that resemble some scary Klingon worms. (Although, that’s cool, too.)
A good time was had by all.
Are you a fan of having themed get-togethers with friends? How do you keep it simple and fun?
