Every time I think to sit down and write something lately, it seems to be a gripe about something.
People be makin’ me cranky, yo!
And I don’t like to be that person.
But, you know, the reality is I am that person from time to time. You probably are too.
So, to give the world a bit of balance (and to keep my blog from dying a slow death made of silence, empty coffee cups, and untold stories), I offer you a list of sorts.
THIS, I DO NOT LIKE
(to be said in the voice of Little John from the BBC TV series Robin Hood)
1) The Internet.
Okay, I know what you are thinking. And yes, you’re right. (Just kidding. I don’t know what you’re thinking, but if feels good to be right, doesn’t it? Enjoy it.)
I’m not hating the whole internet, just the culture that seems to have appeared from the ease in which we get to express ourselves.
Did you know there is a Twitter account that exists solely to remind you not to read the comments on the internet? It’s the smartest bot I know.
Reading the comments on news posts, forums, tumblrs, reddit (you get the point) will lead you to believe that a high percentage of the people in existence are insane.
And it’s not just the comments. It’s everywhere. People threatening bodily harm, rape, and death because people don’t agree with them. Or changed their beloved video game.
Excuse me while I lock myself in my room and unplug.
For so many reasons, but lately, for talking to me.
Well, not ALL talking. But things like this:
“Oh, so you don’t really work.”
I have a full-time job. I’m not talking about being a full-time mom (although I am also that, and that is a lot of work).
I have boss and a title and a desk and post-it notes and spreadsheets and clients and phone calls and emails and an unhealthy need for coffee and all that stuff plenty of other people have at their job.
What I don’t have is rush hour commute. Or a cubicle. Or the need to shower before noon.
Because of this fact, I’ve had (on more than one occasion) people I know make the assumption that I don’t have a “real” job.
Stop. Just stop it. Before I slap you.*
I don’t have enough of it, lately. It seems whenever I get one thing completed, there’s more that has to be done.
Yes, I’m aware that this is not a unique problem. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t make me crazy from time to time.
THINGS I LIKE
1) The Internet
Did I say I didn’t like the internet? ‘Cause it’s kinda aweosme.
I mean, I can listen to Tom Hiddleston read me poetry, or learn how to make brownies with greek yogurt instead of butter, or see a dog who looks like Benedict Cumberbatch, or have all the feels over a comic strip.
Or listen to things like this:
Or see things like this:
One of the chances to give during GoWithout on this blog involved a mother who sadly lost her twin baby boys. That same mother is now spending her days in the NICU with her new two week old baby boy. He needs a heart, and in addition to offering emotional support and encouragement, the online community is doing what it can to help her with the various expenses that comes with this sort of thing, .
Sometimes, people are cool. Feel free to go be one of the cool ones.
These days, I may not have a lot of it, but it’s making me appreciate every little bit I get. It’s making me think about how I spend each bit of it.
It’s also causing sleep deprivation, but that is neither here nor there.
Earlier this week, I took a break from writing, blogging, mindlessly wandering the internet under the guise of research, to play with the kid.
He asked for me to take pictures of him “being a letter” and I captured a variety of photos that reminded me how fortunate I am to have the time I do.
I guess sometimes, it all balances out.
What are you appreciating lately?
*I am not promoting violence, nor will I actually be slapping people who annoy me…that would probably do me more harm than good
